April 2025 marked one of the UK's warmest Aprils in recent years, with temperatures soaring to 27°C in London, significantly above the seasonal average. This trend of rising temperatures is expected to continue, with forecasts from the Met Office indicating a higher likelihood of heatwaves this summer. 

Extreme heat isn't just uncomfortable; it poses serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, children, and those with certain illnesses, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, obesity and some mental health conditions. Dehydration, heatstroke, and exacerbated medical conditions are real threats during prolonged heatwaves. 

Join Our 30-Minute Online Heatwave Training Sessions 

The Climate Action Team, in collaboration with Newham Social Welfare Alliance, is offering concise, impactful training sessions designed to equip attendees with the knowledge and tools to protect residents during extreme heat events. 

What Will Be Covered:

• Understanding the specific climate risks in Newham
• Raising awareness around the health implications of extreme heat 
• Identifying and supporting at-risk individuals 
• Accessing and utilising public health resources 

Who Should Attend: 

If you're a social worker, community organiser, faith leader, or anyone working directly with residents, especially those who are vulnerable, this training can help you to support them in the coming months!
