Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

Hello Everyone,

When I think about Newham, I really am inspired and have great pride because of all the wonderful members of our communities doing amazing things.

From women in our borough leading the way across all sorts as I discovered when I marked International Women’s Day last Saturday; and when I reflected on the fifth year anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic last Sunday during the national moment of reflection that takes place nationally, as we collectively remember the impact Covid-19 had across all our communities. In Newham, as we lovingly remember the loved ones we lost during one of the most difficult times for our country, I also remember the heroic actions of our valued NHS nurses and doctors, as well as the Ambulance Services and all sections of our communities that came together to help each other with love, compassion and kindness.

I started the week marking Commonwealth Day, an opportunity to reflect on, and celebrate, the uniqueness of Newham: our  diverse communities and our people who have a connection to all the countries of the Commonwealth. This year’s theme of ‘Together We Thrive’ resonates deeply with resonates with me and my vision for us to elevate and showcase the glory of our borough through the richness of its cultures, traditions and collective spirit.

Newham is a proud tapestry of communities from around the world, many of whom share a heritage rooted in the Commonwealth; with over 70% of residents having Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nigerian, and Ghanaian backgrounds.

We proudly flew the Commonwealth flag outside our Stratford and East Ham Town Halls, using the day as a reminder of the bonds that connect us through shared history, values and aspirations that have shaped the identity and values of our borough.

Commonwealth Day is not just about acknowledging our ties to the wider Commonwealth family, but about celebrating the contributions and achievements of our residents who continue to enrich Newham’s social, cultural and economic life. From local businesses and community groups, to schools and places of worship, we see everyday examples of how diversity and inclusivity strengthen our borough.

I encourage everyone in Newham to learn more about the cultures that make our community so vibrant, welcoming and thriving. We are all Newham, and I’m humbled to see and experience, every day, examples that show the very best of what our borough has to offer.

This week, I also had the privilege of attending MIPIM 2025, on behalf of the Royal Docks, as part of Opportunity London’s delegation. It was an incredible opportunity to showcase Newham as a hub of growth and innovation to global investors. I highlighted the Royal Docks as a key driver of London’s future, with three major development sites included in the city’s £20bn investment prospectus. Meeting with leaders and investors, I shared our vision for sustainable, inclusive development — ensuring Newham remains a place where opportunity thrives and residents benefit from long-term prosperity.

However, MIPIM wasn’t just about showcasing what Newham has to offer — it was about building lasting relationships that will unlock funding for affordable housing, new infrastructure, and community spaces. The event opened doors for collaboration with investors and developers who are eager to contribute to building a fairer Newham. With £5bn of investment expected by 2037 in the Royal Docks alone — including £600m to enhance the DLR network — and the potential for a DLR extension unlocking even more homes and jobs, the future is fairer and brighter for Newham.

The three Newham sites highlighted in the £20bn investment prospectus are set to play a crucial role in delivering 61,600 new homes by 2035 and creating 55,000 jobs over the next 20 years. These projects will contribute to London’s goal of adding £107bn to its economy, with Newham at the heart of this transformation. The momentum generated at MIPIM will directly accelerate these ambitions, driving the borough’s evolution as a global commercial and cultural hub — and ensuring the benefits of growth are felt by every resident.

Lastly, I want to encourage everyone – residents, community organisations, and businesses – to get involved in this year’s Great British Spring Clean, which starts on 21 March. Help keep your street, park or any part of the local community clean and tidy by pledging to pick up one bag of litter, or more, to show everyone you love where you live. You can even organise your own litter-picking group via the Council’s website! I’ll be out there doing what I can, and I hope to see many of you doing the same.

As we head into the weekend have a wonderful weekend with whatever you are doing; and do take care of yourself and loved ones. Until next week!

Best wishes,

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE
