This week, the roll out of our new food waste recycling service continues. Some households have already had their Food waste recycling starter kits, while others will get their new food caddies over the next few weeks - so keep an eye out for yours! By the end of the year, around 76,000 street-level homes will have their starter kits and caddies, while flats and properties above shops will receive theirs in the spring. We have had a great response from local people to the opening of the brand new state-of-the-art Green Street Library. I thoroughly enjoyed the opening event and pitting my wits against Newham’s own Bobby Seagull in a unique taken on University Challenge. We are celebrating Black History Month throughout October with a series of events at our libraries and public spaces. If you haven't visited recently October is the perfect time to get out and see what our libraries have to offer. I visited Top Curls Unisex Salon in Green Street recently to chat to staff and understand how we can do more to support black-owned local businesses to thrive. On Saturday, there will be a Black Traders Marketplace at Maryland where you can come along to support traders. Looking ahead, November is Islamophobia Awareness Month, and we will be marking it with a programme of events that highlight the deep contributions that Muslim communities have made to the borough. We are hosting events throughout the month, and you can check them out on our website. Hate has no place in Newham. This is a borough where diversity is our superpower so why not take the time to get involved and join one of our local events? Forhad Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain |

Day of Action to crackdown on crime and fly-tipping
The East Ham and Plashet Day of Action took place last week to target hotspot locations to tackle antisocial behaviour, fly-tipping and illegal dumping.
The council's Community Safety Enforcement Team worked with Environmental Crime, Parking Enforcement and cleansing teams throughout the day.
The aim of the operation was to provide high-visibility reassurance patrols, talk to residents, and address issues through problem-solving, prevention, and enforcement.
Teams issued six Fixed Penalty Notices for illegal trading, littering, and fly-tipping, there were 46 notices issued for waste in people's front gardens, and 31 fly-tip sites were reported for removal. |

Our weekly Food Waste recycling service is on its way
It's official – food waste recycling starter kits are now being delivered to around 76,000 street-level homes across Newham. Deliveries will continue over the next 6 to 8 weeks, so don't worry if yours hasn't arrived just yet.
Each starter kit includes a kitchen caddy, a lockable outdoor caddy, an introductory roll of liners and an instruction leaflet to help you get started.
Did you know that 40% of your household rubbish bin is food waste? By recycling it, you can help turn everyday food scraps into renewable energy and fertiliser instead of throwing them away.
If you live in a flat or above a shop, your weekly food waste recycling service will be introduced in spring 2027.
