We’re delivering on our pledge to keep libraries open and invest in our communities.
I was blown away by the number of people who turned out to mark the opening of Green Street Library on Saturday. I would like to say a special thank you to Bobby Seagull MBE who joined me cutting the ribbon and unveiling the plaque. It was great to see residents, staff and councillors coming together to celebrate this commitment to championing education for all and investing in what matters most to local people.
This is exactly what I want to see more of- all of us joining together to enjoy our local areas. The new library has a space for everyone, including meeting rooms, spaces to learn, IT facilities and thousands of books and items free of charge. As part of the GLA Good Growth funded investment Queen’s Market has also benefitted from a huge refurbishment and remains the beating heart of Green Street.
This week we published the latest data on our ongoing Parking and Kerbside Space Survey with the five council wards with the highest responses: Forest Gate North, East Ham, Manor Park, Forest Gate South and Green Street West. Everyone who lives or works in Newham should fill in the survey and have their say in the biggest conversation on parking and kerbside space in our borough’s history. The review is not just for people who drive cars, but for everyone who travels and uses our street spaces. Get involved and tell us what you think.
Throughout October we are celebrating Black History Month. The Council has put together a diverse programme of events, talks and activities to honour the contribution of African and Caribbean people to Newham, including live music and poetry staged by Newham artists at Stratford Library this Saturday. The programme has something for everyone, so check out what’s on offer.

Little Ilford Pride in Place board plot improvements
A new board has met for the first time as they draw up plans to spreadhead a £20million transformation of Little Ilford through the Government's Pride in Place fund.
The first meeting took place last week at the Jack Cornwell Community Centre, in Manor Park, where local resident Mubeen Hussain was sworn in as chair of the Pride in Place board.
Fourteen board members have been appointed, with the majority being local people chosen during the selection process this summer. The board also includes Little Ilford MP Stephen Timms and Councillor Nasreen Shamima and will meet regularly.

Government fostering recruitment drive launched
We are delighted the government has launched a national fostering campaign, almost three months since our campaign to recruit more foster carers began.
The Department for Education’s activity is aimed at encouraging more people to consider whether fostering could fit into their lives. It highlights how many people rule themselves out before finding out more, but fostering is open to a wider range of people than many realise.
The national campaign's aims align with our own Newham-focused campaign objectives, which encourage you to consider whether you could be the missing piece in a child’s life.
