It’s been another busy week in Newham.
On Wednesday, I was delighted to attend the first meeting of the Little Ilford Pride in Place Board at the Jack Cornwell Community Centre. With £20 million of government investment over the next decade, this programme gives us a huge opportunity to deliver lasting benefits for local people.
Joining Stephen Timms MP, local ward councillors and community representatives, I was struck by the energy and enthusiasm in the room. Under the leadership of Chair Mubeen Hussain, residents now have a real opportunity to help shape the future of their neighbourhood.
I want to see more of this in Newham – residents sharing their thoughts and shaping our borough.
That's why I'd encourage everyone to take part in our Parking and Kerbside Strategy consultation. More than 1,000 residents have already shared their views, and I want to hear from as many people as possible before the consultation closes. You can find out more below.
This week, I also had the opportunity to speak with Jim Davis as part of BBC London's Meet the Leader series. It was a chance to discuss my vision for our borough and answer questions directly from residents. If you'd like to listen, you can find the interview on the BBC website.
Finally, National Hate Crime Awareness Week begins on 10 October. Throughout the week, our Community Safety and Enforcement teams will be out across the borough raising awareness of hate crime, how to recognise it and how to report it.
Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and welcome in Newham. If you experience or witness hate crime, please remember that you are not alone. Support is available, and we will always stand with those affected by hate and discrimination.

National Hate Crime Awareness Week
Ahead of National Hate Crime Awareness Week (10 - 17 October), we want you to know there is plenty of support available in our borough. You are not alone. You can be the voice that helps build a stronger, more united and inclusive community. Hate has no place in Newham, and together, we can work to eliminate it.
During the week, our Community Safety and Enforcement teams will be out and about across the borough raising awareness of hate crime and the support available. We’d love to meet and hear from residents, so come along and have a chat with us if you see us in your local community.

Enter the Newham Schools Challenge and win rewards for all!
We have partnered with BetterPoints to use their free app to run a Schools Challenge for selected infant and primary schools as part of the BetterPoints Newham programme.
If your child attends one of them, you’re invited to take part, going up against other local schools for a chance to win prizes, for those who attend. Users can win BetterPoints each week and earn BetterPoints daily for travelling actively to school.
The school that bags the top prize will scoop £500 in school resources, the runner-up will get £250 worth of supplies, while the third placed spot will be handed materials covering £150.
Meanwhile, the schools with the most sign-ups will win a tennis taster day, thanks to the National Tennis Association, and the runners-up will win a Rocket Padel taster session (to give to up to 25 pupils), thanks to Rocket Padel Beckton. The challenge runs until Friday 18 December.

Where the wildflowers grow....
As the nights grow longer and we head into Autumn you may notice our dedicated park team cutting back the wildflower meadows in our green spaces. Don't be alarmed!
This is planned seasonal management and is an important part of maintaining our healthy and beautiful wildflower meadows for years to come. The meadow areas are deliberately allowed to grow and flower during spring and summer, providing valuable food and habitat for bees, butterflies and other wildlife.
Once flowering has finished, we cut the meadow and remove the cuttings to stop vigorous grasses from taking over - which gives wildflowers the best chance to grow again next year. |
