This week I was out in the community meeting local people and working with partners to bring about the change and improvement Newham deserves.
As part of my ambition to make Newham the capital borough of sports in London, continuing the incredible legacy of London 2012, I visited Lee Valley VeloPark last Saturday for the Brompton World Championships. I took part in the race along with a few hundred others, finishing in 212th place. It was tough, but I’d highly recommend giving it a go. If you’re tempted to take part next year, the Council offers free cycling training for those who want to improve their skills and confidence.
I also visited The Foundry to see West Ham United Foundation’s community hub. The Foundry delivers over 35 different initiatives- from skills training and sports sessions to specialist mentoring and guidance. Our young people deserve a wealth of opportunities, and I’m working closely with partners to make these available. I’m not just saying this because I’m a Hammer, but The Foundry is a brilliant example of a major organisation giving back to the community it serves.
Local people should feel safe when they leave their homes, and the Council and Police are working together with communities to make sure that happens. This week, I met Superintendent Claire Gentles for a walkabout in East Ham, where we spoke to local people about their concerns around community safety. Making Newham’s streets safer is one of my top priorities. Why not check out the Met Engage platform, where people across London can report incidents and log their local priorities.
Finally, I am really pleased to share that the new state-of-the-art Green Street Library will open to the public on September 28. The existing library will shut its doors on Monday while staff transfer the books over to the brand-new space, which includes a dedicated children’s area, public computers, bookable meeting rooms for community groups, and much more. I cannot wait to see the community walking through the doors for the first time.
This is just a snippet of all the work the Council is doing to make Newham a safer, cleaner, more prosperous borough. Watch this space for more to come!

Are you a private foster carer? We can support you If you are a private foster carer and looking after somebody else’s child, there is a legal requirement to let us know. This ensures the safety and wellbeing of all children in our borough is prioritized.
Private fostering is very different from a child or young person being cared for by an approved local authority foster carer. A private fostering arrangement is when a child under 16 (or 18 if disabled) is cared for and accommodated by an adult who is not their parent, legal guardian, or a ‘close relative’, for at least 28 days.
These care arrangements are made between parents, legal guardians and carers without local authority involvement. Find out more about private fostering, including how we define ‘close relative’ > |
