It’s been almost 100 days since I was elected Mayor of Newham, and what an exciting few months it has been. Whether I’m speaking to residents on our streets or reading your comments online, one message comes through loud and clear: people want neighbourhoods that are safe, clean and respected. That’s why I’m delighted to introduce our new Noise App, giving residents a simple way to help tackle noise nuisance across Newham. Using your smartphone or tablet, you can quickly and securely report issues, share evidence and receive updates on your case, all in one place. One of the app’s biggest benefits is that it’s available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So if noise is affecting you late at night, you can report it as it happens. We'll be sharing details on how to download the app soon. But creating neighbourhoods we can all be proud of is about more than tackling problems. It’s also about bringing people together and celebrating what makes Newham special. That’s why I’m delighted to launch our new Street Parties Fund, with grants of up to £650 available to help residents host a street party on Sunday 20 September. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your neighbours, celebrate your community and spend time together. Take a look below to find out more. Have a great weekend when it arrives. Thank you for having your say on the proposed DLR extension Thanks to everyone who had their say on the recent DLR extension to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. We know how helpful the extension would be, especially by giving Beckton Riverside a direct rail connection, making journeys to jobs, education and services quicker, and improving links across the River Thames. TfL will now review the feedback and develop proposals in line with Environmental Impact Assessment work. This will help confirm the design of the final scheme, which TfL plan to submit in early 2027. We will share further updates as the proposals progress.

Could you start a Bike Bus at your child’s school? The start of the new school year is a great time to launch a Bike Bus and build a new routine from day one. By making the school run fun, active and social, it could quickly become popular with children and families at your school. A Bike Bus is a group of children and adults who cycle to school together along an agreed route. Like a bus, it can have planned stops where other families join along the way. Bike Buses are organised and led by parents and carers, rather than schools. Families work together to choose a suitable route, arrange meeting points and agree which adults will support each ride. Each journey also helps reduce traffic around school gates, improve local air quality and make surrounding streets calmer and safer. You do not need to have the route or every detail planned before contacting us. We can offer advice to help you explore how a Bike Bus could work for your school community. Could you get a Bike Bus rolling at your child’s school?

Greener roads and cycle routes take root across Newham You may have spotted new trees, rain gardens and planting appearing across Newham. They are part of our wider work to transform the borough’s roads, pavements and cycle routes, making them greener, safer and more welcoming. Ten trees have been planted at Pool Street near Carpenters Road, Wellington Road, along Cycle Future Route 7 and outside Forest Gate Station. Highways projects at Pool Street, Wellington Road and along the Royal Docks Corridor have also delivered 422 square metres of rain garden planting. These planted areas collect and absorb rainwater before it reaches drains, helping to reduce surface-water flooding during heavy rainfall. They also bring more colour to streets and create habitats for birds, bees and other wildlife. Together, these improvements will make local roads and public spaces greener and more welcoming.
Most trees are planted between autumn and spring, with further greening planned as Newham’s highways improvement programme continues. |
