Since becoming Mayor, I have been clear that cleaner streets are one of my top priorities for Newham, and I am determined to deliver the changes residents want to see. That's why, from September, every Newham household will be entitled to three free bulky waste collections each year, saving residents up to £100 while helping us keep our borough cleaner. You can find out how to book a collection below. This builds on other action we've taken to tackle fly-tipping, including plans to double the maximum Fixed Penalty Notice from £500 to £1,000. Like many residents, I am fed up with seeing rubbish dumped on our streets by a selfish minority who expect others to deal with the consequences. Illegal dumping damages our neighbourhoods and creates unnecessary costs for the council and taxpayers. 99.83% collection rate within 24 hrs, we have launched five targeted Illegal Dumping Action Days in locations identified by residents.
So far, our teams have: - Knocked on more than 1,100 doors and spoken to over 500 residents
- Carried out 99 fly-tipping investigations
- Issued eight Fixed Penalty Notices, with further cases under investigation
My message is simple: there is no excuse for fly-tipping, and we will continue taking action against those who blight our borough. Together, we can create cleaner, greener and more welcoming streets for everyone in Newham. Forhad Mayor Forhad Hussain |

New deep-cleansing programme targets busiest shopping streets Alongside our scheduled street-cleansing work, we’ve introduced a new High Street Deep Cleansing Programme to give some of the borough’s busiest shopping areas a deeper clean. On Friday 31 July, Cllr Susan Masters, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Environment, and Cllr Imam Haque, Deputy Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Children, Education and Communities, joined our teams at 2am to thank them for their work and to show their support for the new programme. Using specialist jet-washing and cleaning equipment, teams are removing ingrained dirt and chewing gum, graffiti and paan staining, and dirt from litter bins and street furniture. The programme is covering East Ham High Street North and South, the Plashet Road shopping parade, Plashet Grove and part of Romford Road. |

Food waste recycling is coming to your area in October In November 2025, we successfully introduced weekly food waste recycling to 10% of the borough. In just six months, 12,000 households recycled 346 tonnes of food waste – that’s the same weight as 28 double-decker buses. Now it is your turn to join thousands of Newham neighbours already taking part. From 12 October 2026, the service will begin for around 76,000 remaining street-level households. Before collections start, households will receive a small kitchen caddy, an outdoor food waste caddy, an introductory roll of liners and an instruction leaflet.
The final phase will begin in spring 2027, when the service reaches remaining flats and flats above shops. Find out more about Food Waste recycling > |

You chose the streets. Our teams are taking action
We launched five targeted Illegal Dumping Action Days in locations chosen by Newham residents. The first three Action Days took place on Rutland Road, St George’s Road and Bristol Road. So far, our teams have: - knocked on more than 1,100 doors
- spoke with over 500 residents
- carried out 99 fly-tipping investigations
- issued eight fixed penalty notices, with further cases still being investigated
Teams also removed dumped rubbish, shared advice with residents and introduced measures to discourage further dumping. This month, the programme continues with Action Days on Wakefield Street and Plashet Grove. Download the Love Clean Streets App > |

Illegal waste carriers targeted in joint enforcement operations We are working with the Metropolitan Police and partner agencies to stop illegal waste carriers operating in Newham. They could offer cheap rubbish clearances, but then dump the waste illegally on streets, pavements or open land.
During June, four joint operations took place on Barking Road and High Street North. Officers checked vehicles carrying waste and took action where the law was not being followed. The operations resulted in 11 fixed penalty notices for failing to hold or carry a waste carrier’s licence, 18 vehicles seized by police for separate traffic offences, and nine arrests relating to immigration offences. |

Newham's sustainable drainage milestone
Newham’s sustainable drainage schemes are now capable of dealing with up to 1.1million litres of surface water at any one time, which is roughly half of the water in an Olympic swimming pool.
This drainage scheme diverts rain water away from main sewerage systems, alleviating flood risk. Since 2021, the council has been embedding sustainable drainage into streets, public spaces and regeneration projects across the borough.
7,000 metres of sustainable drainage has been installed, along with 375 new semi-mature trees as part of the green infrastructure.
The Royal Docks Corridor programme has delivered approximately 628,000 litres of drainage capacity, alongside more than 4,000 square metres of SuDS planting and 215 new trees. |

Protect Yourself Against Meningitis and Septicaemia Young people may be eligible for a free MenB vaccine to help protect against meningococcal disease, a rare but serious infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia.
The illness can develop quickly and may lead to life-changing disabilities or, in some cases, be fatal.
The vaccine is available through participating community pharmacies for Year 13 students (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008), and for eligible young people starting university or moving into student accommodation for the first time this autumn.
