I am writing to you this week, as Mayor Forhad is on a break with his family. Following the local elections in May, I was privileged to be appointed by the Mayor to be Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Lead for Housing. Housing and the lives of our tenants and leaseholders is my top priority and I have spent the last few months learning about the challenges tenants and leaseholders are facing, and the work we’re doing to address these issues. I have been pleased to see that work is already making a difference, but we all know there is more to do. Some of the action we’re taking includes making sure we’re meeting residents in their own neighbourhoods, through Estate Action Days and walkabouts, giving you opportunities to request repairs, tell us what we can do better and shape the housing service. We’ve also created the Resident Challenge Board, a group of tenants and leaseholders who meet regularly with housing team management to receive updates and advise on our Housing Service Improvement Programme. We've reduced waiting times for repairs and have dedicated teams making sure vulnerable residents get the support they need. And we're clearing repairs and safety check backlogs and transforming the way your complaints are handled.
If you are a council tenant or leaseholder, I’d welcome you to sign up to our housing email newsletter and join our dedicated Housing WhatsApp channel. We know there is more work ahead, and I want to reassure you that improving our housing services and homes remains at the very top of our priority list. Speak soon, John Cllr John Gray Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing |

855 new homes helping more Newham families put down roots
A safe, warm and affordable home gives families the stability they need to thrive. As part of our Affordable Homes for Newham programme, Newham Council has now completed 855 new homes across the borough and remains on track to deliver 1,000 new council homes by early 2027.
Recent completions at John Street (West Ham), Greenhill Centre (Manor Park), Burgoyne’s Depot (East Ham) and Army and Navy (Canning Town) are helping more local people find a secure home close to their families, schools, jobs and support networks.
The homes are offered at social rent, at around 60% of market rent, making them genuinely affordable for residents. They are also built to high sustainability standards.

Up to 4,000 new homes planned for Canning Town
Canning Town took centre stage as a Feature Neighbourhood at the London Festival of Architecture 2026. Now, the focus turns to what residents will see next.
The Council is now developing a masterplan for the Canning Town Estates, following a ‘yes’ vote from residents. The plans could deliver between 1,300 and 1,600 new homes, with 50% planned to be affordable. The regeneration will also look at improving public spaces and connections, while bringing existing residents and new communities together.
Across all developments, there could be over 4,000 new homes in the area over the coming decades.
Residents will continue to have opportunities to see the plans, ask questions and share their views as the proposals develop.

Take part in the survey on carers’ services in Newham
The Council and its local NHS health partners are updating Newham's Carers Strategy. We want to make sure it reflects the real experiences of people who look after others. If you care for a family member, friend or neighbour, your views matter. We have created an anonymous survey to better understand the challenges you face, and what support would help you.
We will use your answers, and the others we receive, to shape the new strategy’s priorities - and develop actions to improve support for carers in Newham.
