Making voting more accessible for Newham residents
Many blind or partially sighted residents face real barriers when voting, as reading and marking a ballot paper often requires assistance. For the first time in Newham, the Council is introducing the McGonagle Reader in many polling stations.
The device provides audio prompts and a physical guide, enabling voters to cast their ballot independently.

Renters' Rights Act - what it means for tenants in Newham
From 1 May, a new law called the Renters’ Rights Act will come into effect, bringing important changes to renting homes in Newham.
The changes will affect both tenants and landlords, including new rules on evictions, rent increases, tenancy agreements, and the information landlords must provide before a new tenancy starts.
Full details are available on our website, and we encourage all residents to read them to understand what is changing and how it may affect them.
A key feature of our website is the “Listen/Translate” function, designed to make this information easier to access for everyone.
By clicking “Listen/Translate” in the header of any webpage, you can open a black toolbar with accessibility tools, including over 100 language options (shown using the two small rectangles icon). This allows you to quickly translate pages, listen to the text, and adjust how content is displayed.

Care-Experienced Young People Shortlisted for National Award with Powerful Film Idea
Young people from the Children in Care Council (CICC) in Newham have been shortlisted for a national award at the Coram Amplify (A National Voice) Awards, where they will present their idea live in front of an audience in Birmingham. Amplify is a national event bringing together children in care councils and care leaver groups from across the UK to share ideas, celebrate achievements, and recognise outstanding youth-led projects.
The young people have been shortlisted for their project, ‘Between the Lines’ (working title); a powerful short film concept designed to challenge stereotypes and create more awareness about being in care. Between the Lines will tell three or four fictional stories inspired by real care experiences, showing both the challenges and the positive realities of care. The project will also include an educational resource pack for schools, with discussion questions, reflection activities, and teacher guidance. |
