Blind ballot
Many blind or partially sighted residents face real barriers when voting, as reading and marking a ballot paper often requires assistance. For the first time in Newham, the Council is introducing the McGonagle Reader in many polling stations. The device provides audio prompts and a physical guide, enabling voters to cast their ballot independently. Research by the Royal National Institute of Blind People at the 2024 General Election found that 66% of blind voters needed help from staff or a companion. Supported by RNIB, the McGonagle Reader restores privacy and confidence. Interim Chief Executive and Returning Officer Paul Martin said the system helps uphold the right to a secret ballot.

Protecting our four legged friends
A Stratford man has been sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work and banned from owning a dog for five years after admitting animal cruelty. Nicolas Reece pleaded guilty at Bow Magistrates Court to five offences involving his dog, Bear. The dog had twice been found wandering as a stray and taken in by Newham Council’s Animal Welfare team in May last year.
When Reece collected Bear for the second time from the Jenkins Lane kennels, officers saw him kick and hit the dog in frustration. Bear was immediately removed from his care. Reece, 48, admitted allowing Bear to stray, failing to prevent escape, and causing unnecessary suffering. He must also pay £1,300 in costs and a £114 surcharge. Bear has since been rehomed.
