Hello Everyone,
I was distressed at the horrific antisemitic terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester yesterday morning. Two people dead, many injured and a community in distress and in shock. It happened on Yom Kippur, a day that is the most sacred for our Jewish communities in Newham, across the UK and globally. A day of community gathering, reflection and prayer at places that allow for a deep connection to God. I issued a statement yesterday, and my thoughts are with those who tragically lost loved ones by this heinous antisemitic act, those injured and the Jewish community who are frightened. In Newham I know we will stand in solidarity with our Jewish community, reaffirming our shared commitment to safety, respect, and unity. We must stand united against antisemitism and all forms of hatred. That’s why we must spend time in the coming days and weeks supporting the vital task bringing communities together at a time when they seem being torn apart. Bringing people together and deepening understanding between people of diverse beliefs is the most important thing we can do, because it feels perilously fragile right now. Communities are scared by what they read, hear and see in the papers, on the screen and online. At a meeting with residents last night, I held a 1-minute silence in memory of the lives lost and for the people injured following yesterday’s antisemitic terrorist attack. A community of our residents of all faiths and none, respectfully silent as they understood the horror of what happened in Manchester yesterday morning – and the implications for all of us. We stay stronger together as a united community. Until next week, stay well.
Best wishes, Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE Follow what I am up to via X/Twitter: @rokhsanafiaz |

Hello, Hello.. Newham’s young people offer advice to police
The Council’s Youth Empowerment Service has been busy over the summer.
Among the workshops, activities, and talks they met with Newham-based Metropolitan Police Superintendent Lucky Singh.
He came to hear what young people think about the police and how they do their jobs.
These ideas will be used in the police’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training programme.
It is part of a new project called Policing with Compassion. It helps the police learn how to be work better with young people, particularly those who are neurodivergent.
By working together, also trying to stop youth violence and make things better for young people everywhere!
