A Smart Move towards the right home
Are you living in a home that's larger than you need, or do you know someone who is? Our pilot rightsizing scheme ‘Smart Move’, developed to help those who are under-occupying a housing association rented property to move to a new home, could be the answer.
If you want to reduce household bills and heating costs or the hassle of maintaining a larger property, move to a home that better meets your health needs, or simply want to move closer to family or facilities, Smart Move could help you to find your next home. |

Keep your food waste caddy fresh this summer
Rising temperatures can raise some concerns about food waste and fruit flies in our kitchens.
Since food waste is collected weekly, using your food waste caddy means it is taken away more quickly and prevents food sitting in your black bin for up to two weeks. This will help tackle odours and rotting, but there are also some easy tips to keep your indoor caddy fresh all summer long! |
|
| |
|
- Empty your indoor caddy regularly, especially in hot weather.
- Keep your indoor caddy dry and consider lining the bottom to absorb excess moisture. Bicarbonate of soda is also a natural wonder. A quick sprinkle at the bottom of the bin will neutralise acidic odours before they can attract pests.
- Dab a few drops of peppermint essential oil around the rim of your caddy to act as a brilliant, fresh-smelling deterrent - flies detest the smell of peppermint!
- Minimise risk of fruit flies by washing fruit straight away: eggs can hitch a ride home from the shop on fruit skins.
- During the hottest months, keeping high-risk treats like bananas and melons in the fridge also prevents eggs from developing.

Are you safe at home?
England have had a great start to their World Cup campaign - a source of excitement and celebration for many. However football tournaments bring an increase in harm behind closed doors.
Research shows incidents of domestic abuse rise dramatically during major sporting events and Hart is no exception. Around 6,500 people in Hart were estimated to suffer domestic abuse in the year ending March 2025 and women aged between 18 and 24 have the highest rate of being a victim in Hart and nationally. |

If you or someone you know needs support at any time, contact the Stop Domestic Abuse advice line on 03300 165 112. Our Housing team can help you find a new home if you need to leave where you live now to escape from abuse – call 01252 77423 for support. |

Keeping your cool in hot weather
As well as making us feel uncomfortable, hot weather can make our homes overheat; this can affect our health and is especially dangerous for older people, young children and people living with health conditions. |
|
| |
|
Simple ways to stay cool during a heatwave - It might sound counterintuitive, but keeping your windows, curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day can help keep your home cooler by blocking out sunlight and heat. Open them once the sun has gone down, or early in the morning and let the fresh air in.
- Turn off lights and appliances when you’re not using them as they let off some heat and cost you money.
- Use a fan if you have one.
- Often there are some rooms in our homes that are cooler, so spend more time in there if you can.
- Keep yourself and others hydrated, drink sips of water regularly.
- If you’d like a more bespoke approach to keeping your home cooler in the summer or warmer in the winter, book a free appointment with the team at My Home Made Better.
Look out for others If you have elderly or vulnerable friends, family or neighbours, check on them, particularly during very hot days as they could become dehydrated in hot homes without even realising it. This is because as we get older our sense of thirst weakens, meaning that some people might not feel the need to drink, even when their body needs fluids. Find out more: |

- Don't risk a fine Having a clear out at home? If you are paying someone to get rid of your waste you could be fined if anything is fly-tipped. Protect yourself and the environment by only using licensed waste carriers, retain a waste transfer note from the collector and keep a receipt as proof for your waste transfer.
- Local plan consultation ending soon The Local Plan will set out the long-term approach to a range of planning matters. At this early stage of the process, we are conducting a statutory ‘scoping’ consultation, asking for views on what it should contain. This consultation is open until the end of Friday 19 June so this is your last chance to share early views.
